Background of the Study
In many rural areas, women have traditionally faced limited opportunities for economic participation, particularly in entrepreneurial ventures. In Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State, vocational education has emerged as a vital tool in empowering rural women by providing them with the skills necessary to start and sustain small businesses (Fatima, 2023). Vocational training programs specifically tailored for women have introduced courses in areas such as food processing, garment making, and digital literacy, which are directly linked to entrepreneurial activities (Garba, 2024). These programs have not only enhanced the technical capabilities of rural women but have also boosted their confidence and economic independence.
The integration of vocational education into rural development strategies has been widely recognized as an effective means of promoting sustainable economic growth. In Maradun, vocational centers serve as hubs for skill acquisition, enabling women to transition from traditional roles to active business participation (Ibrahim, 2025). The hands-on nature of these training programs helps demystify business management and provides practical knowledge that is essential for running successful enterprises. Furthermore, the support from local government and non-governmental organizations has helped to create an enabling environment where rural women can access micro-credit facilities and business development services, further reinforcing the impact of vocational education on entrepreneurship (Yusuf, 2023).
Despite these advancements, numerous challenges persist. Cultural barriers and societal expectations continue to limit the extent to which rural women engage in entrepreneurial activities. Inadequate infrastructure and insufficient training resources further exacerbate these challenges, leading to a gap between the potential of vocational education and its actual impact on women's economic empowerment (Suleiman, 2024). Moreover, the lack of mentorship and follow-up support after training programs often leaves graduates without the necessary guidance to navigate the complexities of business management. This study therefore seeks to critically examine how vocational education influences rural women’s participation in entrepreneurship in Maradun LGA, with a focus on identifying the barriers and proposing strategies to enhance the effectiveness of these programs (Fatima, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Although vocational education initiatives in Maradun LGA have been introduced to empower rural women through entrepreneurship, the expected economic impact has not been fully realized. Many women who complete vocational training still encounter significant challenges when attempting to establish and sustain businesses. Primary among these challenges is the lack of adequate post-training support, which is critical for translating newly acquired skills into successful entrepreneurial ventures (Garba, 2024). In addition, cultural constraints and societal norms often restrict women’s freedom to pursue business opportunities, thereby limiting the reach and impact of vocational education (Ibrahim, 2025).
Moreover, infrastructural deficits such as limited access to modern training facilities and outdated equipment undermine the quality of vocational programs offered. These deficiencies contribute to a gap between the skills taught during training and the real-world demands of running a business (Yusuf, 2023). Financial constraints further exacerbate the situation, as many women lack access to the necessary capital and financial services needed to initiate and grow their enterprises. The absence of structured mentorship and business advisory services also means that women are often left to navigate entrepreneurial challenges on their own (Suleiman, 2024). Consequently, the full potential of vocational education as a catalyst for rural women’s entrepreneurship remains underexploited. This study aims to explore these challenges in depth, identify the key factors hindering the successful translation of vocational skills into profitable enterprises, and propose actionable strategies to enhance the effectiveness of vocational education in promoting rural women’s entrepreneurial participation (Fatima, 2023).
